Wedding photography is a bit expensive, isn't it?

Article by Hannah - 13th March 2026

We all have smartphones. I'm writing this on mine right now. You can pop into CEX and buy a decent DSLR camera for a few hundred bob. Uncle Dave has a camera. Shall we go with the cheapest option? Why is a photographer so expensive?

Well...

A lot of us have photographers in our families (you can probably tell I am the photographer in mine) but not many of our photographer cousins have captured weddings. It's so easy to ask a friend to take photos on the day. But there's a lot more to a wedding day than clicking a button.

Uncle Dave realising he left the lens cap on

To help explain why experienced wedding photographers aren't actually expensive, here are some articles when things have gone a bit wrong:

A newlywed couple were devastated after bungling wedding photographers ruined their big day by taking "horrific" photos

Wedding Photographer Accused of Fat-Shaming After Over-Editing Engagement Photos

I have had so many brides come to me after the wedding: 'I wish I'd got a professional to do it'.

You're paying for the promise your wedding day is beautifully captured and safely stored for the rest of time.

It's the safety nets upon safety nets that you are actually paying for.

  • High performance SD cards that get the image quickly from the camera, ready for the next photo
  • A camera with dual slot SD cards, so you have 2 SD cards working (in case one breaks!)
  • A back up camera in case the camera itself stops working
  • Batteries upon batteries upon batteries
  • Hard drives and cloud-service for back up
  • Public Liability Insurance
  • A backup photographer on-call for each booking
  • Training courses that ensure the wedding is photographed professionally
  • Unlimited consultations to ensure your day is captured as you imagined it and more
  • Hours of editing (removing distracting items - over 100 Fire Exit signs, and counting!)
  • A studio you can walk into and say hi! (We're based at the Loft Space, Britannia Mills, Slaithwaite)

So, is wedding photography expensive? If you want your day captured properly, and this is non-negotiable. I think that's worth a bit more than the £100-150 we charge per hour.

If you measure mistakes as expensive, then choosing an inexperienced photographer is the most expensive mistake you can make.

AN: When we got married we paid for a photography and videography duo. They had never done a wedding video before, so it was discounted. They met me for the first time on the wedding day - no pre-wedding meeting - not even a video call.

It was only when they delivered the highlights reel that we realised their mistake: they had forgotten to record the personalised vows and speeches.

All of our photography & videography comes with unlimited consultations and a free engagement shoot. You can walk into our studio and see the equipment. You can ask us anything, and we'll make sure to follow your ideas.

We look forward to meeting you!

(and throwing you/your spouse in the air)

PS: we have packages to sing and dance about!
